Dreams of the Year Behind: 2008

Posted by - December 30, 08

years

In light of the approaching New Year, it is once again time for year-end reflections. Do we wonder if 2008 was a good year for anime? Without a doubt, 2008 was no 2007, yet there was an abundance of good in 2008. Where did 2008 win, and why will I remember this year in anime?

Marathon 2008: Third Round

Posted by - December 27, 08

And another round in the bag, with some rehash. As previously mentioned, links to reflections can be found on the year-end marathon page. Honestly, this round pissed me off more than the last, and two of these series I have yet to finish, but I feel I’ve had enough to assess them in the final placing (finishing may lower or raise their placing, but because it is either, it is more than likely not to change positions).

No Snow Fix

snowfix

Merry Christmas - Happy Holidays - Seasons Greetings!

Unfortunately, we have no snow in Florida, and it’s not even cold this Christmas, but a bit humid and over 25C. As much as I love a cold and snowy Christmas, it’s still a good time of year. Rather than formulating my own holiday post, I’ll likely be reading other’s, bouncing comments, or noting. I’ve also slowed the marathons, and will probably not fit everything I’d like to complete by New Year’s, but I’m okay with that.

Enjoy what we can with the people who are around, or even if alone, find some digital company, but let’s not forget to find a smile. I wish everyone bright holidays, warm if it’s cold and cool if its hot.

Marathon 2008: Second Round

Well, the [in]finite queue is not friendly, but the biggest issue comes from decidig what I’d like to marathon ^__^ Timing is important. So here is a few of the recent things I’ve finished:

Quick Rehash: Ratings

Posted by - December 13, 08

Just a short bump, but while pondering ratings with hikago in #ab, I decided to try and test another system’s values on the melative system. I saved the technicals for the melative blog, but I hope anyone that caught the previous post checks it out and maybe can express its shortcomings.

Also featured in that post is a descriptor of what the values mean, and though they do not show on the current implementation, they are calculated and stored in the db; so little time to fix things.

I would like to say that any of these cataloging sites like ANN could just up and use such a system, but I’m afraid it would break (series ratings would swap many places), because the premise was not there in the beginning. A typical issue would be that some users’ ratings would be zeroed due to the redundancy of their votes…. I’m sure if a bunch of ratings went for zero contribution it would cause a ruckus. While it is possible, I don’t recommend restricting list size.

Beat Your Ratings

Perhaps it isn’t a secret, I’ve a thing for wondering why individuals can sincerely trust finite point-scale ratings (10 balloons, 3 hearts, 5 clouds).

Marathon 2008: A First Round

Posted by - December 8, 08

Though this week holds some exams, I went ahead and dug into some mini-marathons over the weekend.

Detroit Metal City

This was a real surprise, though I was already up to episode 7, it was quite easy to enjoy. The irony was gold, but I sort of wished for more Aikawa Yuri.

Yakushiji Ryoko no Kaiki Jikenbo

Yakushiji Ryoko was an exceptional delight, but the main drawback was the cheap-feeling supernatural monsters Ryoko and Izumida managed to get involved with; felt a bit like Speed Grapher in that aspect. Still, the last 5 episodes were a fantastic finish. Ryoko (the character) does sexy extremely well, and I’m not sure I’ve seen anything this year that compete with it’s quality of service (it’s not cheap and ecchi).

Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

I didn’t finish thisyes , but I did realize it is not a good choice for marathon, however I only felt a little SZS burnout 8 episodes in. While I love the girls and the humor found in their personalities, it’s tough to sit through so many spins on ordinary-random topics… one per week is enough.

I was going to link my reflections for each series, but I realize there may be spoilers, and seeing that they are listed in reverse-chronological order, it’s be to not link directly to the title listing. All reflections can be found here (general listing, no spoilers).

Thus begins a few weeks full of marathons (where applicable). Some things are terrible for marathoning, and I’ll likely not push too hard here, especially if they should have little effect on my annual perspective. I am going to try and get roughly halfway through each series, even if it is a terrble marathon.
