Nodame Cantabile: Restart

Posted by - November 11, 09

Nearly a month ago I decided to begin a Nodame Cantabile rewatch. There was much hubbub about a group rewatch, though I’m not sure how that played out. I do know ETERNAL kicked things off which was stimulating, and so I began…

rewatching Nodame Cantabile (episode 01)

Guess what!? This weather is too good to pass on this opportunity.

Yes, I enjoy the series when the weather is cool, cold, or freezing; a tangent in itself. I’ve watched the first episode countless times since that awesome Autumn of 2006, with a number of repeats earlier this year. Strangely there was one little piece I have always overlooked, a piece of Chiaki’s perspective on Nodame.

Eh

In the scene before the duo perform their practice piece, Chiaki mentions that Nodame resembles Vieira, which I completely brushed off, multiple times. Chiaki, who obviously suffers from a sensei-complex, let’s his guard down to the viewer. His attraction to Nodame has sprung.

Winter 2007 I wrote about the Nodame Cantabile anime and touched on the relation between Chiaki and Nodame. Though this little piece of Chiaki does not alter my overall thoughts on their admiration-attraction, I feel it seeds a deeper level of attraction.

I sense that Chiaki’s desire to be with, and learn from Vieira is not solely out of admiration. Likewise, Chiaki’s minute attraction to Nodame will ultimately become something similar, a desire to be with, and learn from Nodame.

For reference, I enjoy Nodame Cantabile in the cold, for the warming sensation of the experience is well-complemented. Hearts.

Revisiting Nodame Live

Author recently published a visual retrospective on the Nodame Cantabile anime (2007 Winter). Actually, he’s posted quite a bit on Nodame in the past month, but I ask… where’s the live action?

The reason I bring it up is extremely indirect; having spotted the recently aired HanaKimi Special, I remembered that I had yet to watch the Nodame specials (all 220+ minutes worth). So I ventured into the mix this week, and interestingly enough, I find the live-action at an advantage.

KenZou

When I stumbled upon this drama I was looking for something light and fun, with a good mixture of emotions. Thankfully, the series provided more than I had hoped for. The showing by main characters was very good, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an anime adaptation; it could work.

The basic premise is that Iwase Ken, well forget it, actually it is explained in the first 5 minutes, and deals with re-living regrets. Due to magical fairy circumstances, Ken gets that chance, and must win back his childhood friend. Sounds so generic, and it truly is, but usually if something is going to rely on smoke and mirrors, it won’t go far with me. Luckily, the premise was not the driving point [nor the finishing point], instead there is an interesting way about storytelling, through moments of Ken’s memory.

So I finished this drama the other night, which took a matter of a few days woven between eat, sleep, and school. It was most definitely worth it, and the writing turned out to be very good; coincidental but appealing. I didn’t cry, but some may, more importantly was the overwhelming feeling of heartbreak and failure; I don’t get those feelings everyday, and even though they are considered “negative”, I gladly welcome them.

Interesting, fulfilling, and highly enjoyable.
