Moyashimon begins with an interesting premise, there is a boy who can “see” microbes. From the initial screens I found of the episode 01, I had little idea what the animation was like. After a couple good mentions among the anime bloggers, I had to give it a shot; hooked first episode.
Through the half, Moyashimon has the essence of slice-of-[university]-life in hand. The episodes do not necessarily flow together. Instead, they snapshot sequential events, “mini-stories”, each episode, but it is well done, thanks to enjoyable characterization. I’d say that is the strongest point to the series, the characters keep things in check, and new ones pop about as the episodes pass (usually bishoujo-style sempai <3).
Yes, the Moyashimon bishis have a lot going for them. Slightly eccentric, lab coat attire, and various temperaments make me wonder if all the pain they could cause would be worth it to be in Sawaki or Yuuki’s shoes… Hasegawa likes to bite snap.
Even with all the hot science action abound, I see little romance in the series; there may be a little, but its not a major point through episode 6. Some of the finer points come from this development the writers have gone into about sake and brewing. There also lies numerous details that could be thrown in concerning Hasegawa and Mutou’s worldly adventures, Aya’s background, and more. With plenty of story outlets, Moyashimon cannot get boring, imo.
Plus, the microbes are always partying. Basically every shot of the microbe swarms is accompanied by little voices in party mode. They float around aimlessly, but its fun, they always have a smile. May be this makes them cute, I haven’t decided.
Moyashimon is solid fun with an enjoyable atmosphere. And yes, those little microbes will “brew your time”!
