Midway Flux :: Sketchbook

At first take, Sketchbook came off as the peaceful-cute, slice-of-life of Autumn, given, but halfway down the lovely path, Sketchbook is blooming other amusing, enjoyable aspects.

The characters have been composed with hearts and sparkles all around. I’d say there are many small-great joys to each character, but they are distinguishable. What I mean here is that each character adds their own attributes, and for slice-of-life, this is major points when it appeals. Bland characterization doesn’t cut it in series without plots. While Sketchbook’s characters are not overly vivid, the possible perspectives brought to each episode is gold. The characters are to thank, even the neko characters.

I can’t say that the series is about anything in particular; slice. There is little focus on sketching, but more focus on kitty-life around town. It’s amusing though. Contrasting it to ARIA, the closest matching is the pace, a soft stroll. Yet, ARIA was centered around something more substantial, Padawan Undine life, and Sketchbook is centered around LIFE in general! This, alone, is a feat because I’m not sure I’ve seen any series that is so hardcore slice-of-life; Sketch doesn’t have other major contributors to its genre blend. Hardcore slice-of-life FTW!

Perhaps I’m fibbing in that last statement, because I’ve found myself laughing with many of the scenes in the first 7 episodes. The comedy influence is present and working, but I wouldn’t say it is an Azumanga-style. Though, I’ll venture the opinion that Sketchbook is more slice-of-life than Azumanga. This stuff isn’t for everyone.

Out of the seasonal mix, Sketchbook still remains atop many. I can understand how it may not enthuse a majority, as it doesn’t charge the hearts of men or build an intricate storyline, but I’m a slice-of-life kind of person, and it soothes the busy days. I don’t expect Sketchbook to sway from its current style, so my final impressions will probably stand along the same lines. I’m loving it.

    It’s always awesome to find fellow Sketchbook fans. I’m also a very big slice of life lover, and Sketchbook is right up my alley. I would definitely call the show more slice of life than comedy, but it does both well ^.

    *nod nod* (stole that from Sora)

    I can see what you meant now with Minami-ke being primarily comedy and secondly [maybe] slice.
