Kanon :24: Hello Bye Bye

Posted by - March 17, 07

Well, tehe, Kanon finished much different than I had expected. Previously I thought Ayu was down-and-out of the ordeal, but…

Comatos

Poor thing. I’m not going to go into the story or theory on the magic that takes the cake for Kanon’s story, but it was enjoyable, heartfelt, and turned out light.

This is compareable to AIR, where the outcome is not so “happy.” En totale, the mood/tone switchup near the end detracted a bit from the bittersweet spectacle of beauty the plot had rolling almost the entire go, but I can’t really think of a better option. Why?

If someone was to watch the series up to 23 and call it quits, the story is full flesh and with one or two sentences it could be closed, very sad, but complete. The final episode does a lot though in terms of closing [and opening] questions. Basically, 24 was a reflection or realization episode which Yuuichi and Ayu finally find each other, in truth, after 7+ years. I will probably rate this 9+ out of 10 no doubt, because the story and animation sparkled well.

I LIKE the long hair!
Ayu ^^

Ayu did sort of come up the ranks in terms of favorite harem girls after the final ep (I think its healthy to have most to least favorite girls of a harem). Here they are (not counting Akiko, the mother you only wished your friends had):

Nayuki! Everything about this girl is kawaii. I didn’t have her favored but she started pulling the ranks with her neko-love acts of kawaii, sleepy breakfast scenes, and her overall bright outlook (for the most part).

Sayuri! Like Nayuki in the fact that they are healthy and normal, possibly a cuter character. This was close, and it was a toss up between Sayuri’s giggle and Nayuki’s ‘Fight-o! Daiyo’. Still both fantastic. I know she wasn’t really part of the harem.

Ayu! Uguu~ the amazing. She had so much screen time, and it was well spent. The Uguu~ quotes are out of control, but the scary movie scene had some unique ones. Truthfully, I had Ayu on top at the beginning of Kanon, but she worked all the way to the bottom after the other girls’ arcs (the bottom isn’t bad). Episode 24 pulled her up.

Makoto! Auuu~ What can I say, she’s a fox, that gives her super credentials with me. I really liked her story and character, so I’d say that it is truly a tie between Makoto and Ayu for the 3rd spot. Makoto had flare, and seeing her go was so sad, perhaps overly sad with one episode dedicated to “losing herself” near the end of her existence.

Mai! *chop on the head* She was mysterious and usually interesting. The sweetness is her will to protect Sayuri (and love for tako-sausages). I felt the apex of her story was the ballroom dancing act, yes.

Shiori! Hmm, I really hate to have her my least favorite of this bunch, because I enjoyed her character. She had a perfect balance of screentime and dialog throughout the entire series. The interesting thing to me, unless I haven’t realized something, was that she was the only haremette that Yuuichi had not previously known (Sayuri doesn’t count). The beauty was the rejoining of her and her lovely sister, Kaori.

Ah, so that’s it. Farewell Kanon from 2006! Here’s to looking out for more Key and KyoAni projects, both together (if any) and separate.

KyoAni seems to be turning everything Key does into an anime series XD So much so that some people go as far as to dub the duo “KeyAni”

Nice list btw, a lot different from my rankings, but fanboying and character rivalry are part of the fun with harem anime.

…………Favorite anime, great characters and a touching story

    favorite character

    Ayu 2nd was mokoto

sad because mokoto regresses until she is basically a fox’s intelegence in human form before she is gone

im not sure wether they should have had ayu die or not, of she did i would be sad but, she didnt and they didnt go in depth about what her current relationship with Yuuichi or how progressed it is i cant figure out what she was during the whole story(not ep 24) because everyone saw her so she was not just a part of Yuuichi’s memory or imagination she was actually there is some magical way

overall it has become my favorite anime closely followed by onegai twins(please twins)

I’ve heard ghost stories of people being seen on ships or trains far from their bodies. They weren’t dead but incapacitated, like in a coma, but they were observed as being in the world. It is probably improper to call this sort of thing a ghost, but perhaps a phantasm would be a better term.

So I guess my understanding makes Ayu a phantasm while she was comatose. ^^

Kanon 2006 was a really great series. I think it is in my top 5, but I’d have to check for sure.

    Ah, can’t wait for winter.
