Mornings of Mayheim and Priorities of Fall

Posted by - November 18, 06

For most of the series I’ve started watching this fall, I’ve at least hit the 4th episode. I haven’t made anything formal, but some of my interests are getting uninteresting. After taking a glance over the fall season, I was sure I’d have at least 5 solid shows to enjoy until winter, but I took it upon myself to check out more than 5 just in case “things” happen. The start of fall looked something about like this (no order, first col):

I can contend the first column is not overly supurb, but for the most part, I’ve enjoyed some of the series. The only one of these that ended up not getting good play time was Bartender; I won’t go into that, but the recent late-comer to my enjoyment is Negima!? So with that, the second column shows how the fall has occured.

Not much of a change, if I say so with confindence in my experienced comparison skills. Although, underlying this list is something that even I found as a suprise, those which I am actually keeping up with; third colum.

Whoa whoa whoa!? Where’d Death Note disappear to? Well, let’s go by priority. I’ve read the Death Note manga and its complex extravagance, and though the series is very very well done, I just don’t find it a priority at the moment, oh well. Perhaps it just isn’t “new” too me, which is a bit odd, because generally, I don’t care about the hype of “new” things, especially automobiles (no relevance to anime). So I have this “actually watching” list, but there’s still beef on the platter; a Pumpkin Scissors pattie and if I group Tokimeki and D.Gray-man together they could make a mini pattie as well. In truth, Pumpkin Scissor has decent animation, interesting concept and atmosphere, but where is it going? It doesn’t have enough comedy to keep me interested in these non-schilant episodes of the late, so I’ve decided to de-prioritize it *sign*. As for Tokimeki and D.Gray-man, I don’t intend on taking my attention off of them like PS, but I do hope the next few episodes are solid solid solid!

D.Gray-man episode 7 had some quirkyness to it imo. Story portion and revelance of Mana was good, Lenalee has “dark boots” (please let them step on me) alright, but I didn’t find myself “into” the action. Action was good, but it felt as improper as a 14 yr old being felt up by her “onii-san” *coughKoshi-donoehem*. I feel I can summarize Allen and Lenalee fighting in a few words “flying/hopping around abolishing akuma with ease at random”, I guess I wanted a more solid battle, where Lenalee doesn’t get flicked into a building and looks like she’s gonna pass out while saying “it’s alright” to Allen, who is about to get em0 about the situation. That’s just kind how it felt, good thing Allen really didn’t get teary eyed, because there was enough sentiment from Jean. Oh well, I know it will get better, so this is just a nick on the chin.

Tokimeki, well who knows. It’s sad that the predicted winner of Aoba, if it can be considered winning, is soo easy to assume (Amamiya). Seriously, I don’t much care for her; I actually kinda liked when Inukai told her to shut it in episode 6. Harem path isn’t the problem, staying on the harem path is. Episode 6 has little to do with harem etiquette, so blah! Tokimeki is funny, but they need to use their tools better, Aoba shouldn’t get chased anymore, let’s focus on some doki-doki moments with Dolphin-sama or something. I’ll keep watching of course, but compared to the comedic school giants I’m familiar with, Azumanga Daioh and School Rumble, Tokimeki isn’t on the level, and I don’t expect it to be (please let me eat my words).

Alright, well I’m going to wrap this up with a list of whats in the bag, on the wire, and in the window:

If I didn’t mention a series I haven’t necessarily dropped it (ie Death Note) doesn’t mean I’ve dropped it, but I won’t be prioritizing it at the moment, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t dropped it either (ie Crested Love). Gosh I love Saturdays!

I didn’t even think of Negima!? until I found out it’s directed by Akiko Shinbo. Now, not only is it one of the best things I’m watching, but I’m even buying the manga. Weird how little shows can just sneak up on you like that.

I can understand why you’re not watching Death Note anymore, but I love watching anime adaptations of manga so it’s a must watch for me, just like D.Gray-man. Both animes pale in comparison with its printed counterpart, but I still like seeing how they turn out. As for the others, Yoake bombed, Pumpkin Scissors fell and Tokimeki sunk. That’s about everything that I started to watch but became uninteresting. However, there are also some that gradually became better, such as Negima!?, Gift, OtoBoku and Sumomomo.

  3. aloedream says:

Yes, Negima! I’ve been checking out the manga as well.

Danny, yes, I’ll watch Death Note eventually, probably do some catch up in December. I haven’t check out Gift, but I agree on the others. I checked out Soukou no Strain and Busou Renkin; of the two Soukou is more palatable, but I’m not sure if I’ll keep up with it yet. Busou meh, just can’t deal with another one of those.

I recall watching some of the first Yamato Nadeshiko and I liked the OP, so I think I may take to it, buh buh buh… ~_~ Sundays

Biggest problem for me is the rate at which some of the subbers distribute the anime. I tend to lose interest or forget about animes that don’t get subbed very fast. Like for Negima or Bartender. If they got subbed faster, I might actually enjoy them more, but waiting 3 weeks per sub is kinda rough. In the end I’m only really enjoying 3 anime this season: Death Note, Black Lagoon, and Sumomomo. I’m not counting One Piece since it’s ongoing, but that’s been pretty good lately as well.

These three cover a broad enough range of genre that I don’t really need to seek enjoyment elsewhere. I’ve got suspense and a smart plotline from Death Note, Action in Black Lagoon, and tons of comedy and some romance from Sumomomo.

Death Note, Black Lagoon, and Sumomomo.
That is a very lite schedule, but quality is abound. I would have thrown in Black Lagoon, which I’m nearly religious about, but I consider it ongoing as well, and it’s probably the most entertaining of the series I’m trying to keep up with (including some from summer).

Waiting on subs can be painful, the two biggest waits, for me, are OtoBoku and Code Geass, but both seems like they will have more attention seeing the releases this past week. Tokimeki isn’t speedy either, but its not that high priority. Of these three, I’ve been watching the raws of Geass and Tokimeki, [and Asatte no Houkou], though I may spend less time on the Tokimeki raws.

  6. [...] So the other thing that was bugging me a bit has to do with the shounen genre vs Yamato Nadeshiko daa–da-daa. A couple posts ago I compounded my fall interests but had not given Yamato a chance; also in the list was Busou Renkin. Call me silly, but I just didn’t “feel” the shounen bla bla blah at all. Its too damn righteous, makes me want to be not righteous. I’ve almost had enough input of “I-want-to-save-the-world… but-I-don’t-want-anyone-to-die”. Seriously! Kenshin was bad ass, the manga even better; I get the point. I don’t need 17 [thousand] leads running around screaming, “This isn’t right! I won’t let you!” with their little “Righteousness” T-shirts sized accordingly. [...]
