Spring 2009

Posted by - April 11, 09

Well, I believe I’ve sampled most everything I’d like to take in this season. I’m going to be lazy here and just post my stream of impressions/scrobblings/etc. Individual series can be filtered in the view.

And to wrap-up, in order of priority:

  • Fullmetal Alchemist (2009)

    -
No doubt I enjoyed this. Everything pieced together nicely the first episode, and I’m reserving my excitement for the journey. Fabulous and fantastic!

  • Eden of the East

    -
    Well taken. Reflection.

  • K-ON!

    -
Firstly, Mio overwhelms me, and she is possibly my reason for prioritizing K-ON! I enjoyed the vibe and the introductions, but I am drastically wanting the wide-screen. Mio~ Honestly, is there any other character this season who is soooo enamoring? I melted inside.

  • Warring Era Basara

    -
Manly as hell, ridiculous, and feudal Japan battles. With our fists, we both argue and converse! Makes me want to go out and head butt friends and family.

  • Asura Cryin’

    -
Forgot to mention this in the first draft, but definitely deserves a place here. I get good vibes with miko+mecha, and the characters have a fair amount of allure. The basis of the 3 opposing groups is rather hazy, but begins to clear in episode 2. Enthusiasm rising.

  • Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen

    -
Mazinger is an absolute, psych-ward roller coaster ride. Did anyone have a clue what was going on the first episode? I suppose that’s part of the intrigue. Lightning of Spring!

  • 咲-Saki-

    -
Surprisingly well done by Gonzo. I was intrigued with the mahjong play, and definitely liked the chemistry between Saki and Nodoka; competitive growth is abound! Since Umisho and Bamboo Blade, I’ve grown fond of sports anime with cute characters. I don’t think Saki can match Bamboo Blade, but it should be just as enjoyable.

  • Basquash!

    -
If only I could enjoy basketball. Luckily, the production is awesome. Reflection. (should I just copy-pasta these?)

  • タユタマ -Kiss on my Deity-

    -
First episode was extra cute, and I’m so ready for more Mashiro smash-action! Its a fun watch, nothing to pressing or serious, and easy on the eyes… given the initial airing rips weren’t the best.

  • Tears to Tiara

    -
Yea, I really don’t know. Just have to wait and see where this goes.

  • Valkyria Chronicles

    -
Alicia’s thickheaded self is quite amusing. It’s tough to judge it after 1 episode, but if there happens to be solid character development the series will sure be well-consumed. Not too keen on the setting, but the characters are decent.

  • Shangri-la

    -
About the same as the previous two, but the potential of intensity lies in the lolis. The biggest item of interest at this point is the three resonating knives held by various parties.

  • 花咲ける青少年

    -
And there’s the awesome Li Ren. I enjoy shoujo, but what I’d like to see here is how the breakdown occurs between Kajika and Li Ren during the game, since they definitely have something. Production isn’t top of the line, but I’m looking more towards development.

  • Pandora Hearts

    -
This could very well rise with episode 2 (which is somewhere atm), but I’m deterred by the airing quality, and hope some clean releases will surface. The premise doesn’t strike me uniquely, but the tension could make for an enjoyable tale.

  • Summer Storm!

    -
Rather enjoyed this and even adjusted to the crispy character designs. The atmosphere is much to Summer for me and I will be catching back up with this when that season arrives. Other than that, I hope SHAFT will give us something more thrilling that the [anti]climatic Maria+Holic.

  • 07-Ghost

    -
Unfortunately, I will not be following this series. I wasn’t very enthused with the magic powers, and though the thought of vengeance for Teito is intriguing, I didn’t really feel very compelled towards it. I’ll go one more episode, but likely not going to dive in.

Spring, I’m quite satisfied. Let’s just hope I can keep up with all the priorities.

Oh wow, you’ll be watching so many anime :)

I was somewhat disappointed in the new shows… Nothing really caught my attention except some ojiisan :P I might blog regularly about a certain person with apodysophilia and another one with silver eyes because they are so popular :P

P.S. I like your new website design - it is compact and easy to navigate.

  2. Ryan A says:

Well, the top 3 series are enough to satisfy me, of course FMA isn’t really new, K-ON! is sort of just there (not epic), and Eden of the East is more like a film than an average series… So basically, subtract those and it’s rather average for now. Better assessment would probably come 6 weeks later when we’ve settled in and adjusted to the particulars of individual series.

It’s difficult to assess how large a seedling will grow at first sprout.

  3. aurabolt says:

    No Guin Saga? :(

I really don’t know what to make of Higashi no Eden. I was too busy cringing at everything American in it. Guess it won’t hurt to stick longer though…

    I’m watching…
Guin Saga I like epic animu. \(o_o)/
    Higashi no Eden Johnny!
    K-ON! Mio is my waifu.
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ It’s decent. I don’t hate on Bee Train like so many others.
    Valkyria Chronicles Most solid series?

I’m still waiting for four more series though. Probably will drop two of them.

  4. Ryan A says:

    @aurabolt, I hope I fixed that correctly ^^

Well, I was thinking that they go back to Japan, but I guess they may stay in America the entire time. All the American stuff might get annoying, but if they happen to leave….

Nice mixture there. I didn’t check out Guin Saga, not sure why, but I wasn’t really that enticed; I don’t know much about it either. There’s always summer to pick stuff up.

    4 More!

  5. FFVIIKnight says:

I’m mixed on a lot of shows. Guin Saga reminded me of Jyu Oh Sei for some reason… except, the whiny little brother lives. Eden of the East really feels like Bourne Identity but has some decent English voices. Basara is the action series for this season, hands down. Phantom and Asura are my top 2 picks so far… A bit wary on other adaptations, FMA included since the manga gets a bit… crazy.

  6. Ryan A says:

    @FFVIIKnight

BASARA! And oh shi-, forgot to mention Asura here… LOLZ shit and I was going to watch the 2nd episode just now. Well, it’ll be in the stream. I haven’t checked out Phantom, dammit! O.o

I never kept up with the FMA manga, but I here the first series had plenty of discrepancies. If I start to hate it somewhere down the line, I’d be okay with that. Mostly have sentiment towards some of the characters.

  7. aurabolt says:

I was hoping the little brother in Guin Saga dies too. Remus is just pathetic. His sister is way too nice to just ditch him. That’s as far as the Jyu Oh Sei connection goes though. Well, speaking of it…

Ryan A, enjoying shoujo is one thing. Tackling an obvious reverse-harem bishie-fest shoujo is another. Should I be amazed, or start inching away from you? :P

Phantom is just “okay”, so don’t set expect a lot. Especially when the first episode is about a guy going, “Who am I?” the entire time. Also, Ein is a Kirika clone, lol.

  8. Ryan A says:

@aurabolt, lol. I should clarify that I enjoy shoujo when the female lead is worth all the attention she spawns from said bishis. Unfortunately, the girls aren’t always that great, then I can’t understand why the guys yield so much attention, my identification with the males fades away.

“Who am I?” reminds me of that scene in Zoolander. XD

  9. FFVIIKnight says:

“Singing, The best part of waking up, is Folger’s in your cup…. FUCK YA”

I would think Shuri by your side is better :)

  10. Ryan A says:

@FFVIIKnight it totally is.. I just thought of that song when she mentioned coffee… XD The whole ordeal was delicious!
