Love Power, How are you?

Posted by - November 15, 08

I know I’m not the expert fanatic on the L.P., but revisiting D.N.Angel, or resuming after 5+ years makes an interesting impression.

Harada

I picked up the first 9 volumes of D.N.Angel years ago at my local library [ocls], and it was rather enjoyable. Briefly, the art is nice, the characters are bishi and cute, and the premise is decent (so the body duality thing has been done before 1997, but thievery is appealing).

As quick as I went through 9 volumes, there was never a follow-up. Reading on 3Yen a while later, there was random news of a volume 10 due out eventually. Still, I didn’t follow up, and never complained that it was extremely delayed.

Recently, I decided to see what was up with the manga and if 1) it had finished and 2) how much there was to catch up on. Sadly, it hasn’t finished, but lucky for me there was 4 volumes more to read … I only needed 2 for the Love Power to shine.

Notice, please excuse any slight spoiling, but if the last sentence of the next para is a spoiler, it’s a weak one, and doesn’t really change anything that happened in the previous 10 volumes. Sosorry.

So I never payed attention to it, but light-love plays an important part of the manga, and though I don’t think there is strong romance, there is definitely positive heart-thumping vibes. More than that, volume 11 explicitly describes the power of “bringing out Dark” and how it is not proper unless done with love at hand. But, going further, an important premise detail is also mentioned that when one’s love is satisfied, there is no longer the need for Dark.

To me, that’s not your typical Red 40 cherry-flavored Love Power, but a genuine milk-creme sweetened with love [served on strawberries coated in chocolate] kind of Love Power. It feels uplifting, but isn’t going to cause cancer.

I’m anxious to see the end of this manga, but really who reads D.N.Angel anymore? or who has never read it? I wonder because I assume most have at least read some, but it’s hardly something flashing in the current pop-scene. Perhaps, being 10+ years old and having a bumpy release record doesn’t do the series justice, but personally I _heart_ it.

Unfortunately, I haven’t read it but I also haven’t read a lot of manga in general. I have a friend who was in love with the anime though, when it first came to the US.

I actually haven’t read the anime or manga either. I’ve been planning on watching for awhile now, but I just haven’t gotten around to it~. Maybe somewhat soon…especially since there’s…

    LOVE POWWAAAAAAAAAAAA

Auuu~ I can’t comment on the anime, as I sort of avoided it, but I may check it out eventually for kicks.

@Caitlin I recommend the manga for sure. ^_^ It’s adorable, like Card Captor adorable, but more Majou Shounen I guess lol

@totali, oh U, try the manga as well, but actually I just saw a batch on tosho the other day, which was half the reminder/stimulation of my resuming (the other half was someone talking about black wings in #ab… and there are winged things in DNAngel).

DN Angel is slow. It’s okay, but there are tons of better titles. At least, that’s what I discovered in between DN Angel’s sporadic releases.

I started with Aku-Tenshi’s scanslation during like… elementary/middle school. Then I reread up to the volume 8 or 9 (in Korean) during my first year of high school.

At this point, I don’t care about it enough to continue. Especially after years of having been exposed to… not-so-intelligent DN Angel fans. Call them “noobs” for simplicity. Had to deal with a lot of them when I was a co. admin for a manga site (like OneManga) in the past. Oh yeah, don’t forget the yaoi fangirls on horrible places like LiveJournal.

I say reserve DN Angel people who haven’t read any manga. It’s a good “starter”.

I don’t really remember the speed, but yea it’s not the best by far, it has issues … technical ones too like why there aren’t chapters and volumes, but volumes and stages or w/e.

At this point, I don’t care about it enough to continue

That’s how I felt as well, but it’s light and easy to like. Perhaps it’s more popular than it should be and over-exposed by the yaoi fans, but I never had to wade through that stuff; started with a clean slate one day, and found it very easy to read… but yea that was years ago and thinking about other titles I was into at the time (Bleach, Sukuran), it doesn’t differ that much. Really feels a lot like CCS, just from a different angle.

I think two big flaws are the lack of strong comedy and the flow can be a bit choppy from panel to panel. As for starter manga, I agree, but I can’t really think of anything I’ve read that wasn’t a starting point for someone reading manga… since the majority of titles I’ve read turns out to be shoujo, and they all seem easy to begin with.

Boiling it down, it’s a Love Power title, nothing more or less ^^

Daisuke x Riku FTW! I rather enjoyed the manga way back when it was being regularly published lol. Then, I kinda lost track of it… have to reread from volume 1 to catch up with the latest chapters, not sure when that’s gonna happen though T__T

I found the anime adaptation rather… forgettable. Though, I still heart the Daisuke x Riku raburabu moments~ And of course, Dark-sama is one of the most awesome / hawt bishies EVAR. :P

omg a fangurl *runs and hides*

… jk tehe, it was/is enjoyable, but yea … can we say almost retro.
