Code Geass :: Reality TV

Posted by - August 27, 08

Reading Mike’s comment on a recent Geass post, brought this notion to mind. Geass is the reality TV series of anime.

Why would I say this? And I’ll quote myself, “reality tv, as we know thrives on the drama, which is usually played up, creating intensity for the viewing experience… Geass is very much the same.” Reality series are predicament after predicament, and so forth. Reality series take a situation, focus on the conflict, and amplify the importance. Reality series rely on the slightest chance that one character will act illogically, or unreasonably.

I’m just saying Geass seems a lot like a reality show, and I’m just not partial to the tao of reality series (tao? the way they drive themselves I suppose). Given, Geass can create a greater intensity because it is fiction and the medium has a greater range than television, and plenty of people around the world highly regard such things (thank you MTV for spending 5% of airtime on music), but I…

Sad for me, it’s not my favorite style, even with the intriguing characters, monarchy, futurism, swexy designs, and more. Freeze framed, I love it, but put it in motion, it’s like a transmission grinding pebbles.
