May all men be boy-traps first! Can I even say Mako-cakes is male, I hope so. Clearly, Mako needs a lot of training upstairs, but not being the sharpest tool isn’t bad. This character has experienced the Minami family in an entirely different aspect. I respect his level of dedication! There is little to compare when taking into account Makoto was the centerpiece of “that” magic trick, and before that he was merely crammed up under a kotatsu…. where 4 Minami were warming their legs! Unbelievable.

Physis, Terra e…

Never has my heart saddened in the event of a character surviving. Physis’s is that character. Her gentle way of life is so soothing, she is like a beautiful muse, but she is among a time of chaos and collapse. It’s hard to render why she was so moving to me, but I think it was her nature and the journey. Terra e… was a very long journey for all the characters, and Physis was there from start to end. She discovers her nature and she lives, but she is deeply saddened in the end; she is a lonely space flower whom I could only give my sympathy.

My Pick

Simon, TTGL

He was someone I didn’t suspect for much development, but he did it. Simon took a journey about becoming strong in your own eyes. I feel he was a simple character, but his drive and growth throughout TTGL reflects how awesome he really was. Some have that motto, “Never give up, never surrender!”, but that doesn’t enclose Simon’s way; his life couldn’t be summed that easily. Simon experiences so many trials, from Kamina to betrayal to Nia, but he walks forward. It is a great portrayal of a great character.

Nodame, Nodame Cantabile

Hmm, originally I didn’t have her in mind, she was sort of annoying and weird, lol. May be is was all those strange noises she makes that won me over; Mukya!!!! Nodame is an atypical character, she just isn’t normal, and despite her usual cheery appearance, she isn’t as strong inside. Through the series Nodame develops into someone who wants to change and does not want to be left behind by her love, Chiaki (who would totally leave her!). Her strive for the competition was stunning, she drove herself to sickness and ultimately did not accomplish her goal. I would possibly not have chosen her if had not been for this loss, because upon this reality, Nodame’s world breaks. The great part about her is that in the end, she finds herself, at the same moment Chiaki finds her. I think she realized that she can do things on her own, but truly wants someone there for her as well.

In the end, it was her development that made her character enjoyable.

Runner-up

Chihiro, ef -a tale of memories-

She is there, in the circle, bound by 12 years and 13 hours. Chihiro is such a delicate character, her entire essence is wavering and gentle. Of course I enjoyed her moe dynamics, but she was in a delicate love, under uncertain circumstances. She continually questioned her life and her relation with Renji, how could it ever work out? She writes a story, a twisted resemblance to her life. In words she survives, but if those words were to disappear, her memories are lost.

She is the lamb.

Favorite Chemistries of the Year

Otani and Koizumi, Lovely Complex

The odd couple. As the All-Hanshin duo they were hilarious. Ragging on each other and cross talking, they have a very comedic chemistry.

Izumi Konata and Hiiragi Kagami, Lucky Star

She could grab her nerves whenever she wanted. The great thing about these two is that Konata set Kagamin off with ease. Most of their conversation where small talk, but Konata managed to bring out some nice tsundere tones from Kagami. Tsundere Kagamin, yea, I like.

Mikan and Mei, Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight

At first I thought I would mention Mikan and Manabi, but it was more interesting to see Mikan and Mei interact and become friends. Mostly because Mei had walls all around her, and even though Mikan is shy and reserved, she managed to break those walls.

Simon and Nia, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

A beautiful thing. Nia was absent for most of the second phase of TTGL, but from their meeting to their marriage, they had something special. Everything about they way they were together in the Dai-Lagann days was something to smile about; cute, innocent, lovely.

Isaac! Miria!, Baccano!

They were just so entertaining to watch. Lively, fun, young, and a great sense of humor.

Jomy Marcus Shin and Keith Anyan, Terra e…

Although these two did not have any sort of meeting for 90% of the series, they had a bond and a destiny. They were bound to meet, but due to their positions they were destined to conflict. May be in another time they would have been great friends, but it is the sadness to their relationship that makes their chemistry notable.

Okonagi Yuko and Amasawa Yuko, Dennou Coil

The gentle girl and the courageous girl. A brilliant chemistry here. The last episode of Dennou Coil was titled “Yasako and Isako” for a reason.

Here is where I mention that I didn’t watch every series out there in 2007, so I may have missed some stuff that would have impressed me more or less. I did however attempt to multimarathon in order to better “know” the year in anime
