  • 1Macross Frontier

Macross Frontier, why have I considered it the best series of 2008? I have thoughts on it, which I will sum in the near future, but in short, Frontier wins in concept and via power. It didn’t matter that the triangle was never resolved or the ending could feel rushed, and I don’t consider it anything close to a perfect series, and surely not up to par of 2007′s number one, Dennou Coil. Frontier has a special essence about it, not in it’s Macross elements, as my opinion is one who viewed it outside the context of a Macross series, but the way it portrayed song power1. One of the most powerful scenes in which this essence was expressed occurred in the final minutes of episode 20, Diamond Crevasse.

In the end, it didn’t matter how unravelled the bad guy scenario became, Frontier was a powerful and dazzling experience, regardless of where it reaches in Macross standards.

Though the new year has already arrived, there are still a couple more year-end posts to be prepared; series categories and characters. Hopefully, I’ll be able to revive a dying hard drive which holds snapshots and have images ready in those posts.

1 – looking into the Macross franchise, song power has always been an important piece due to Minmei. Though I have a feeling the involvement with battle-pop-stars may have been similar, the focus in F, already superstar Sheryl and the brand new Ranka, as well as their triangle with Alto, is sweet complexity. If I understand correctly, the original Hikaru-triangle did not have two pop-stars, essentially competing at everything, nor the paradoxal relationship where Sheryl is trying to catch Ranka, while Ranka has always dreamed to catch Sheryl. This enclosed in a Macross setting was pure win.
